My favorite time of year…. you’ll hear Whispers along the Wissahickon
By Giulia Morrone, Development Manager
Fall is such a special time in the Wissahickon. The leaves turn into vibrant bursts of red and orange, the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, goldenrod pops up in the meadows, leaves slowly flutter to the ground for a satisfying crunch underfoot… and in the midst of all this, Friends of the Wissahickon welcomes friends, families, and members of Wissahickon Valley Park to celebrate the season at Whispers Along the Wissahickon.
If you’re brave, you’ll dress up (last year, I watched a hot dog stare at our bonfire for almost half an hour)—and hopefully you’ll get your friends and family in on a great group costume. But some folks just come to pull up a hay bale and listen to Urban Drawl play bluegrass music by the bonfire (they do a great cover of Wilco’s “Box Full of Letters”), and drink some beer (donated by Love City Brewing this year).
BUT whether you attend to watch your kid boogie down with DJ Marquis at the DJ Dance Party, visit the critters at the ‘Tree House,’ go on a kid-friendly night hike with Wissahickon Environmental Center staff educators, or even go on a hayride along Forbidden Drive, I guarantee you’ll have a great time. And don’t worry. If you don’t dress up, we’ve got a great face painter who’ll hook you up with a design.
All proceeds from the sale of tickets help FOW continue its (almost!) 95-year old mission “to conserve the natural beauty and wildness of the Wissahickon Valley and stimulate public interest therein.”
Tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis to FOW members (e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org for the link to the FOW Member Hub, where you can register for all our events at a discounted price). Non-member tickets include a $20 membership to FOW—that way you’ll be on our list of ‘friends’ for all the great member perks.
