Summit Ave Trail Reroute
9:00am – 1:00pm
Meet at Summit Ave and the Yellow Trail
We got a lot of work accomplished at the Summit Avenue reroute site this June. The first segment of trail is almost completely machine cut; tons of rocks have been installed as chokes and retaining walls, a log ride started, and lots and lots of raking, shoveling, lopping, and trail finishing have been completed. That said, there is still lots to do such as more stone work, finish work, and trail building through a tough patch of wisteria. Not to mention a spur trail to design and build and a creek crossing to negotiate.
At Summit Avenue, the Yellow trail enters the road for 2/10th of a mile before reentering the woods at Old Line Road. This is dangerous and not enjoyable for the many cyclists, equestrians, and hikers who use this popular trail segment. This project will relocate The Yellow Trail so it no longer enters the roadway. Due to the scope and nature of this project, it is difficult to know exactly what tasks will need to be preformed each workday, so come prepared to help tackle a variety of trail building tasks. Parking is somewhat limited in this area. There is a small parking lot at Old Line Road and Summit Ave that quickly fills. A second option would be to park along the road where the Yellow Trail enters, while a third option would be to park up on Cathedral Road and Glenroy, and hike the Yellow Trail to the work site, about a 10 minute walk. Come out and help on Saturdays this July and August!
