The unsurpassed beauty of the Wissahickon Valley in all seasons make it an ideal subject for photographers, both professional and amateur. The creek with it huge boulders and sparkling water, the deep forest with the beautiful tree canopy, the outcroppings of very varied rock formations all make wonderful subjects for picture-taking.

But, the Wissahickon also contains historic structures worthy of the interest of the photographer. Many of the dams and bridges in the Valley are built with picturesque stone; there are also the quaint log cabins once used as warming huts for the park guards who, up to the 1970's patrolled the Park. The building most often photographed (and painted) is the Valley Green Inn with its long front porch and green shuttered windows constructed in 1850.

Professional photographers of the Wissahickon are Ron Tarver, whose photos were in a special Inquirer magazine supplement featuring the Wissahickon and Laurie Cameron who has published a book of his photographs entitled Dreams of the Wissahickon.

The Friends of the Wissahickon hold a photo contest every two years with entries judged in two categories, Landscape and Park Users.
