• Horses still use the Wissahickon--even for a drink.

• National Trails Day 2000 saw volunteers at work on the trail upstream of the Bells Mill parking lot, along the east side of the creek. The day was sponsored by the International Mountain Bike Association which assisted with two of their professional trail crew leaders and provided lunch. Local organizations participating included: the Delaware Valley Mountain Bike Patrol, Bicycle Therapy Store, Jersey Action Riders, Philadelphia Mountain Bike Association, and the University of Pennsylvania Bicycling Team. Trail crew leaders and materials were supplied by Fairmount Park Commission and the Friends of the Wissahickon.

• Over the past several years, approximately 1000 tires have been removed from the Wissahickon, thanks to the Wissahickon volunteer coordinator David Bower and hundreds of volunteers. Pictured here are two of the youngest volunteers, Laddy and Andrew St. George, helping this spring to remove the latest outbreak of tire dumping.

Many tires are dumped by the truckload. If you see illegal dumping, get the license number of the truck and report it to the police or the Fairmount Park staff.

• Dena Sher, chair of the Friends' membership committee consistently represents the organization to larger audiences. Here she is at the Chestnut Hill garden festival this spring.

• Ned Goodrich, M.D., of Ardmore and retired surgeon from Sante Fe volunteers helping to cleanup at the Andorra Natural Area.
